What Is the RBT Competency Assessment? A Complete Preparation Guide for 2026–2027
Finishing the 40-hour RBT training does not mean you're ready for the certification exam yet. First, you have to show that you can actually perform the skills you learned.
That's the purpose of the RBT competency assessment.
It's not a multiple-choice test. A qualified assessor watches you demonstrate ABA-related skills, collect data, follow teaching and behavior procedures, and handle situations you may face as an RBT.
Under the 2026 requirements, the RBT initial competency assessment includes 19 tasks. You need to demonstrate competence across all 19, with three tasks from the Skill Acquisition and Behavior Reduction section completed with a client.

What Is the RBT Initial Competency Assessment
The RBT initial competency assessment is the practical skills check you complete before applying for Registered Behavior Technician certification. It comes after your required 40-hour training and must be completed within the required 90-day window before you submit your RBT certification application.
This isn't a written test. Your assessor wants to see that you can actually perform the skills an RBT is expected to use, follow professional expectations, and handle common situations correctly.
The assessment can be completed in three ways:
With a client: You demonstrate the skill during a real behavior-analytic session.
Role-play: Another person acts as the client while you demonstrate the procedure.
Interview: You explain a concept, describe what you would do, or give examples and nonexamples.
The ABA assessment can take place in one session or across multiple sessions, depending on how it is conducted.
The RBT competency assessment is not the same as the RBT certification exam. The assessment checks your practical skills. The certification exam comes later.
What Tasks Are Included in the RBT Competency Assessment
The RBT competency assessment has 19 tasks divided into four areas.
1. Measurement: Tasks 1–3
If you need a refresher on ABA data collection methods, review the different ways behavior can be measured before practicing these tasks. You may be asked to demonstrate:
Continuous measurement, such as frequency, duration, latency, or interresponse time
Discontinuous measurement, including interval-based procedures
Entering data and updating graphs
The important part is accuracy. If a behavior has a specific operational definition, measure exactly what is written rather than making your own judgment about what counts. It's also helpful to understand the difference between continuous and discontinuous measurement before you practice these tasks.
2. Assessment: Tasks 4–5
As an RBT, you're helping collect information, not independently diagnosing a client or designing an assessment.
The RBT initial competency assessment covers:
Conducting preference assessments
Collecting ABC data
For ABC data, be ready to identify what happened before the behavior, describe what the behavior looked like, and record what happened immediately afterward.
3. Skill Acquisition and Behavior Reduction: Tasks 6–14
This is the biggest section of the BACB initial competency assessment. It covers the practical skills you may use during ABA sessions, including:
Discrete-trial teaching
Naturalistic teaching
Chaining
Shaping
Discrimination training
Prompting and prompt fading
Token systems
Crisis or emergency procedures
A behavior-reduction procedure involving antecedent intervention, differential reinforcement, or extinction.
Three tasks from this section must be demonstrated with a client.
Don't focus only on memorizing definitions. Practice how you would actually carry out the procedure, follow the behavior plan, and respond when something doesn't go as expected.
4. Professionalism and Requirements: Tasks 15–19
The final section checks whether you understand your responsibilities as an RBT and can work within your role. You need to demonstrate or discuss:
Writing objective session notes
Maintaining client dignity
Maintaining professional boundaries
Understanding RBT supervision requirements
Knowing when to seek clinical direction from a supervisor
The last four tasks are completed through an interview under the current assessment form.
The RBT competency assessment is a skills check. Your assessor wants to see that you can perform the required task, document what happened, and know when a clinical decision needs to come from your supervisor.
How Do You Prepare for the RBT Competency Assessment
A good RBT initial competency assessment study guide should help you practice behaviors, not just memorize terms.
Start with the official BACB materials
Use the current RBT initial competency assessment form and task list rather than an old checklist. If you're looking for an RBT initial competency assessment study guide, use the official requirements as your starting point.
Practice the skills in short drills
Run a few DTT trials, collect frequency or duration data, complete ABC data, practice a preference assessment, and work on prompting and fading. Short practice sessions make it easier to spot where you need more work.
Practice with real materials
Use timers, data sheets, frequency counters, graphs, token boards, and other materials you would normally use during ABA sessions. The goal is to feel comfortable performing the task, not just explaining it.
Practice explaining what you're doing
Your assessor may ask why you performed a step a certain way. Be ready to explain that you would follow the behavior plan, collect accurate data, and contact your supervisor when a situation requires clinical direction.
Review professional and ethical situations
Practice what you would do if a caregiver asks you to change a treatment procedure, a behavior changes significantly, a safety issue occurs, or the instructions are unclear. An RBT should know when to ask the BCBA or BCaBA for direction.
Practice objective documentation
Write short, factual session notes without adding assumptions. For example, “Client hit the table twice” describes what happened. “Client was frustrated” is an interpretation.
How Do You Pass the 19 RBT Competency Assessment Tasks
There is no percentage score to chase. You need to demonstrate competence on every required task.
Focus on these points:
Measure behavior according to its operational definition.
Record ABC data using observable facts, not assumptions.
Follow the assigned teaching, prompting, and reinforcement procedures.
Follow approved crisis or emergency procedures.
Write objective session notes.
Maintain client dignity and professional boundaries.
Know the RBT supervision requirements.
Seek clinical direction when a decision is outside your role.
If you do not demonstrate a task competently, you do not automatically restart the whole assessment. The BACB allows corrective feedback and reassessment on another day. Corrective feedback cannot be given during the final assessment of that task.
How Long Does the RBT Competency Assessment Take
The BACB does not require a set number of minutes or hours for the competency assessment RBT applicants complete. Your assessor may conduct it in one session or spread it across several sessions.
Your total time can depend on live-client demonstrations, role-plays, interviews, client availability, and whether any task needs reassessment.
Do not prepare around a promised one-hour or three-hour finish. Prepare to complete every required skill correctly and leave enough time for the RBT initial competency assessment form to be finished accurately.
What Is the RBT Renewal Competency Assessment
You may still come across the term RBT renewal competency assessment when searching online, but the BACB now uses recertification language.
Current RBTs recertifying in 2026 still complete the RBT Recertification Competency Assessment. After that recertification, the next recertification date moves two years out. RBTs certified or recertified in 2026 must complete 12 professional development units during the new two-year cycle, and no competency assessment is required at the 2028 recertification.
This is worth knowing because some older study guides still describe the previous renewal process.
What Changed in the RBT Competency Assessment for 2026
A few changes are especially important if you're preparing for the RBT competency assessment in 2026:
The initial RBT competency assessment now has 19 tasks instead of the previous 20.
Candidates under the 2026 requirements need the updated 40-hour training and current initial assessment.
Assistant assessors must hold an active RBT certification or a higher credential.
RBT recertification has moved to a two-year cycle, with 12 PDUs required after certification or recertification in 2026.
The current BACB RBT initial competency assessment form specifies which assessment method can be used for each task. Tasks 16–19 are completed through an interview.
So, if you're using an older checklist or RBT initial competency assessment study guide, check that it matches the current BACB requirements before you start preparing.
RBT Initial Competency Assessment Examples
These examples are for practice only. They are not official BACB questions or an RBT initial competency assessment answer sheet.
Continuous measurement: Follow the operational definition and count only the responses that meet that definition during the observation.
ABC data: If a work instruction is presented, the client pushes the materials away, and the materials are removed, record those observable events. Don't add an assumption such as “the client was frustrated.”
Clinical direction: If a new behavior appears that isn't covered by the behavior plan, maintain safety, follow the procedures already in place, document what happened, and contact your supervisor rather than creating a new intervention yourself.
